NotateMate · Last updated 14 September 2026
NotateMate is operated by Sberry LLC ("we", "us"). The app records chess games with your phone's camera and turns them into notation. This page explains what we collect, what we do not, and how to delete everything.
The camera feed never leaves your phone. Video and photos of your board are processed entirely on your device to work out where the pieces are. No image is ever uploaded, stored on our servers, or seen by anyone. What can leave your phone is the resulting list of moves — never the picture it came from.
What we collect
Only what the app needs to work. There is no advertising, no analytics, and no tracking of any kind.
- Your email address, if you create an account. Accounts are optional — the app records and saves games without one. Sign in with Apple and Google give us an email address and nothing else; if you use Apple's "Hide My Email", we only ever see the relay address.
- An account identifier, used to link your saved games to you across devices.
- Your games, if you turn on syncing: the moves, the result, the event name, and the player names you typed in.
- Broadcasts, if you broadcast a game live: the same information, published while the game is on.
- Settings, such as board orientation and recording preferences. These stay on your phone.
- A count of how many games this phone has recorded this month, so a free allowance cannot be reset by deleting and reinstalling the app. It is stored against a random identifier for the phone, not for you — it is not your name, your email or any identifier Apple or Google gave us, it is not shared with anyone, and it is never combined with anything else to work out who you are.
Games recorded while signed out stay on your phone and are never uploaded.
What we do not collect
- Camera images or video.
- Your location.
- Contacts, photos, or anything else on your phone.
- Advertising or tracking identifiers. We do not track you across other apps or websites, and we do not share data with advertisers.
Who can see your games
A saved game is visible only to you. A broadcast is different, and this is worth being clear about, because it is the one thing in the app that is deliberately public:
- A public broadcast is listed in the app for anyone to find and watch.
- A link-only broadcast is not listed, but anyone holding the link can watch it. Link-only means unlisted, not private — the same way an unlisted video works.
Player names are shown to everyone watching, so use whatever name you are comfortable being seen. Broadcasts can be watched in a browser without an account or the app.
Who processes your data
- Supabase hosts the database and handles sign-in. Your account and any synced games are stored there.
- Apple and Google, only if you choose to sign in with them, and only to confirm who you are.
We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with anyone else.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account from inside the app, at any time, without asking us: Profile → Manage Account → Delete Account.
This permanently removes your account, the cloud copy of your games, and your broadcasts. It cannot be undone. Your games are downloaded back to your phone first, so deleting the account does not delete your recordings — they stay on the device as ordinary local games.
Keeping your data
Your account and games are kept until you delete them. Broadcasts are kept indefinitely, on purpose: a link you shared should still open the game months later rather than expiring on a schedule nobody was told about. They are deleted with your account. If you want a particular broadcast taken down sooner, write to us and we will remove it.
Children
The app itself can be used at any age. Recording, saving and exporting games all work without an account, and nothing recorded that way ever leaves the phone.
Creating an account requires you to be 13 or older. NotateMate is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.
Your rights
You can see your data in the app, correct the parts you typed in, and delete everything using the steps above. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to request a copy of your data or ask us to delete it — write to the address below and we will act on it.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects you, we will update this page and change the date at the top.
